Prep Roundup: Churchill reaches 5A girls soccer semifinals with 4-2 win over Thurston – Sports – The Register-Guard


Churchill rallied for four unanswered goals in the second half to defeat visiting Thurston 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state girls soccer playoffs Saturday.

The fourth-seeded Lancers trailed 2-0 at halftime against their Midwestern League rival, but Ciana Reyes scored on a cross from Emmi Freeman to get Churchill (10-4-2) on the board in the second half and Maddie Young tied it on a shot from 30 yards out.

Reyes put the Lancers up with a goal off a scramble inside the box and Makenzy added an insurance goal with less than 10 minutes to play.

Brittany Anderson scored both goals for the No. 5 Colts (9-5-2).

Churchill will host a semifinal game against No. 8 Corvallis on Tuesday as the Lancers attempt to make their first state title game since 1990.

Class 5A quarterfinals

Crescent Valley 2, Willamette 1: Anna McCalve scored for Crescent Valley in the 78th minute as the No. 10 Raiders (9-4-2) upset the Midwestern League champions. McCalve’s goal came one minute after Ally LaVassaur tied the score in the 77th minute off a penalty kick for the No. 2 Wolverines (10-5-1). Cali McClave also scored in the ninth minute for Crescent Valley, which will play at No. 3 West Albany (12-2-2) in the semifinals Tuesday.

Corvallis 2, North Eugene 1: Heather Wright booted a bullet from 35 yards out in the 75th minute to lift the No. 8 Spartans (10-4-2) to the upset of the No. 1 Highlanders (12-1-3). Jordan Taylor scored in the 20th minute to give Corvallis a 1-0 lead at halftime, but North Eugene’s Sophie Cleland tied the score with a direct kick goal in the 72nd minute. The Highlanders had a 10-3 in shots on goal but couldn’t produce a tying score in the final minutes.

Class 4A quarterfinals

Marist 2, North Valley 1: Elle Ficek scored in both halves to lead the fifth-seeded Spartans (13-2) past the No. 4 Knights (14-2). Marist will play at top-seeded Hidden Valley (15-1) in the semifinals on Tuesday.

FOOTBALL

Class 2A playoffs

Monroe 49, Grant Union 0: Zach Young ran for 233 yards and four touchdowns, and Louden Ballard caught a pair of scoring strikes, as the top-seeded and defending state champion Dragons (9-1) advanced to the quarterfinals with the home win against the No. 16 Prospectors (5-5). Monroe will play host to Lakeview, a 31-12 winner over Jefferson, next week. Ballard finished with two receptions for 65 yards and Dylan Irwin led the Dragons on defense with 15 tackles. Russell Hodge paced Grant Union with 97 yards on 21 carries.

Class 3A playoffs

Vale 49, Sutherlin 7: The No. 5-seeded Vikings (6-4) cruised their way to a first-round victory against the No. 12 Bulldogs (7-3), and will play at No. 4 Burns (9-1) next Saturday.

Class 1A Playoffs

Lowell 36, Imbler 24: Justin Corp caught a pair of touchdown passes from Symon Thurmon, and Tyson Brasfield rushed for 178 yards and a TD, to help lead the Red Devils (7-3) over the Panthers (7-3). Lowell, the No. 7 seed, will travel to No. 2 Wallowa, a 44-8 winner over Falls City, for a quarterfinal game at 1 p.m. Saturday. Josiah VonDolosky also had a six-yard rushing touchdown for the Red Devils.

Camas Valley 40, Elkton 12: The No. 8-seeded Hornets (7-1) defeated the No, 9 Elks (8-2) at home, and will play top-seeded Dufur (10-0) in the quarterfinals next Saturday.

BOYS SOCCER

Class 6A quarterfinals

Summit 1, South Eugene 0, OT: The No. 2-seeded Storm (16-1) managed to score with two minutes left in overtime to defeated the No. 7 Axe (14-2-1). Summit will face No. 3 David Douglas at home in the semifinals on Tuesday.  

Class 5A quarterfinals

Corvallis 5, Churchill 0: Liam Clark scored in the 12th minute for the No. 2 Spartans (13-1-2), followed by Edgar Monroy in the 20th. The Lancers (11-3-2) scored on its own goals in the 31st, and Riley Mellinger scored just before the end of the first half to put the score to 4-0. Frank Miebena scored the final goal three minutes into the second half. Corvallis will play in the semifinals against No. 3 South Albany (11-2-3) at home on Tuesday.

Class 4A quarterfinals

Phoenix 1, Marist 0: The top-seeded Pirates (14-0-1) scraped by the No. 8 Spartans (10-4-1), and will advance to the semifinals to face No. 13 North Marion (9-4-3) on Tuesday.
